Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
In Nagekeo Regency and throughout Nusa Tenggara Timur province, patriarchal cultures and other
socio-ecological factors (Ndolu et. al, 2024; Hayati, 2013) continue to drive violence against women
and children.
Over the past few years, ActSEA’s Nagekeo staff have been informally providing emotional support and
counsel to women experiencing violence or challenges in their relationships. Motivated by the demand
for and gap in such services, ActSEA has been investing more resources towards addressing women’s
rights.
In 2024, we conducted a presentation with the Catholic chuch in Marapokot Village and with the
parents of the SDI Lego School Committee on gender-based discrimination and violence against
children.
In 2025, we started conduct research with community elders to better understand gender norms and
practices.
An art program to enable women of all ages to express their experiences as a women through creating artwork. Peer support groups for survivors to help each other through their healing process. A confidential helpline for survivors to seek support and advice.
