Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Despite the government’s policy that English must be taught to children up to 12 years old, public schools like SDN Lego simply do not have the funds to hire an English teacher. In contrast, just 9km away, a private school offers children from middle-class families an advanced English literacy curriculum. This inequality results in widening developmental levels and skills between children from different socioeconomic classes, affecting their education and career opportunities in the future.
English Club seeks to address the inequity in English education by conducting weekly English lessons, based on the national curriculum, to Grade 4 to 6 students at SDN Lego.
We are actively recruiting volunteers and hope to integrate self-paced English-learning apps in order to maximize student engagement at SDN Lego (and beyond) without overstretching teachers.
English Club started with an invitation from parents under Yayasan Sao Mere to conduct activities with children around SDN Lego.
